The family has not heard from Thuan Duc Nguyen since Friday, and the 52-year-old never took his planned flight home.

REPORTED MISSING: Norwegian Thuan Duc Nguyen is reported missing in the city of Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

52-year-old Thuan Duc Nguyen is resident in Oslo, and is reported missing together with an Australian friend - whom he traveled with.

The two are activists in the organization Viet Tan, which works for human rights and better conditions for Vietnamese in Vietnam.

They traveled from Bangkok to the capital Phnom Penh on September 15 to meet other activists in the organization. They were scheduled to fly back to Bangkok at 10:30 on Saturday, but did not board the Cambodia Airways flight.

Vietnamese authorities have branded the organization as a terrorist organization, and families fear they may have been subjected to a political arrest.

  • They entered Cambodia legally and have not broken any laws. We hope that people who may have information about their movements will get in touch, writes the organization in a press release - signed by Thuan's brother and the Australian man's wife.

On Thursday, one week after the two men disappeared, Viet Tan reports that the families have sent an appeal to Cambodian authorities. They request help to "as soon as possible clarify where the two activists are located."

The organization also states that the families have had dialogue with the foreign affairs authorities in Norway and Australia.

Dagbladet has spoken with the 52-year-old's brother, Tony Thong Duc Nguyen, who states that they have managed to discover that his brother's movements were captured by surveillance cameras at his residence in Cambodia on Thursday - the day before they lost contact with him.

Viet Tan tells Dagbladet that the organization has documentation that should support the information about the camera surveillance, but that the material cannot be shared.

According to the organization's media contact, this is because their partner does not wish to reveal who was at the location and recorded the video.

Dagbladet has been in contact with the Foreign Ministry, which confirms that they are aware of the case.

  • We are aware that a Norwegian citizen is missing in Cambodia. Due to confidentiality obligations and privacy protection, we cannot provide further comments, writes senior adviser Mariken Bruusgaard Harbitz at the Foreign Ministry to Dagbladet.

The Foreign Ministry states generally that the foreign service can assist next of kin and maintain contact with local authorities when Norwegian citizens are reported missing abroad.

They also emphasize that they do not have the ability to locate missing persons or investigate what may have happened. Such cases are normally handled through international police cooperation.
